Our CSR commitment
CSR is considered through all aspects of our business. Our CSR Committee leads initiatives that reduce our environmental footprint, support our communities, and enhance employee wellbeing. From the way we power our offices to how we recruit and develop our people; every decision reflects our support to ethical and sustainable practice.
Our approach focuses on three key pillars:
Environmental responsibility
Reducing carbon emissions, cutting waste, and promoting sustainable operations.
Community engagement
Volunteering, mentoring, and supporting charities that create lasting social change.
Employee wellbeing
Fostering an inclusive, supportive culture where everyone can thrive.
Environmental and sustainable leadership
We are proud signatories of the CITMA Net Zero Pledge, committing to measurable carbon reduction and environmental accountability. Our initiatives include transitioning to energy-efficient laptops, hybrid working to reduce travel emissions, and sustainable purchasing across all offices. Our website is certified by Tree-Nation, a service that tracks website usage and calculates its related emissions and offsets these emissions by planting trees on our behalf.
We partner with ‘Another Way’, a UK-based environmental charity empowering people to live sustainably. We also encourage employees to use alternative transport through our cycle-to-work scheme and provide recycling and waste-reduction facilities firmwide.
Supporting our local and global communities
We believe that business success should benefit society. Through our Charity Days programme, every employee is given paid time to volunteer or fundraise for local causes. We proudly support Brand Action, which assists communities further afield affected by crisis, and Jonathan’s Voice, a charity promoting mental health awareness in the IP profession.
We are proud to support Birmingham Care Group through regular food bank donations and monthly charitable contributions throughout the year. This ongoing commitment helps provide essential support to individuals and families facing hardship in our local communities.
Our attorneys also mentor through The Chartered Institute of Trade Mark Attorneys (CITMA) and International Trademark Association (INTA) professional bodies; and local universities, investing in the next generation of innovators, professionals and paraprofessionals.
A culture that cares
Our CSR strategy is strengthened by a people-first culture. We offer mental health support, private healthcare, and flexible working to create a healthy, motivated team. Our active social committee organises a variety of events designed to maximise engagement and encourage a sense of ‘at office’ community. Activities are diverse in format and size – often suggested by colleagues – ranging from a weekly yoga club to the annual Barker Brettell Christmas Quiz. This balance of wellbeing and purpose ensures that our people – and by extension, our clients – thrive.
