“ Having a trusted Partner who understands technically and legally our high IP in ai and engineering is critical for innovation to be utilised in healthcare systems globally. Working with Barker Bettell it has been a rigorous and collaborative process  to garner the appropriate protection in the long term investment we have made in developing novel medical technologies and software. “

Founder Prof. Rameen Shakur

Barker Brettell is delighted to congratulate long-standing client Cambridge Heartwear on securing a place on an NHS Supply Chain framework for its innovative HeartSense® cardiac monitoring technology. The framework provides a route for the NHS to access cardiac and pulmonary diagnostic technologies, including wearable monitoring devices.

It marks an exciting milestone for Cambridge Heartwear and its mission to make advanced cardiac monitoring more accessible.

HeartSense® combines medical-grade, multi-channel ECG monitoring with adaptive artificial intelligence and wireless charging in a portable wearable device. It enables continuous ECG data to be delivered to a mobile phone, helping clinicians access diagnostic information beyond conventional hospital environments. The technology has been designed to support earlier identification of cardiovascular disease and stroke risk and help move cardiac care towards earlier diagnosis and prevention.

Significantly, the device and software has been developed in Cambridge and is manufactured in the UK.

Barker Brettell has worked with Cambridge Heartwear since 2018, supporting the company with the protection of its innovations as the technology has developed and its intellectual property portfolio has grown.

Professor Rameen Shakur, Founder and Chairman of Cambridge Heartwear, said of the NHS announcement: “HeartSense® is the world’s first medical-grade, AI-powered, multi-channel ECG wearable and demonstrates what can be achieved when clinicians, engineers and AI specialists work together.” Rameen added that the company wants to help move healthcare towards “earlier diagnosis, better prevention and improved outcomes for patients across the NHS.”

For Barker Brettell, it is particularly rewarding to see an innovation we have supported over a number of years reach such an important stage in its commercial journey.

David Combes, Partner and Patent Attorney at Barker Brettell, said:

“I am delighted to see Cambridge Heartwear reach this significant milestone. HeartSense is an excellent example of genuinely innovative UK technology being developed to address a real-world healthcare challenge.

Having worked with the Cambridge Heartwear team since 2018, we have seen first-hand the innovation that has gone into developing and protecting its technology. We are proud to have supported the team on its IP journey and look forward to seeing what comes next.”

Cambridge Heartwear was born out of research led by Professor Shakur and is based at Cambridge Science Park. The latest NHS Supply Chain success represents another important step in that journey, and everyone at Barker Brettell would like to congratulate the Cambridge Heartwear team.
